Last full week...

This week we have been studying about Governments and Economics.  On Monday, we went over 3 different types of Economic systems and 7 Leaders of the World.  On Tuesday, we will be taking an English Benchmark Test.  Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will be going over more economic concepts and completing a review worksheet for the test.  On Thursday, we will complete a final review in class for the test that will come on Friday.  This test will be over governments, economics, and the leaders of the world.  This is the last full week before Christmas break.

American Culture

We have just started American Culture and will be studying it for several weeks.  Each student was given their last project of this semester on Monday.  This project will be about their own culture.  They will be responsible for having all 8 Culture traits on their poster, in addition to, having three pictures to represent each trait.  On Thursday & Friday, we will be watching a movie.  This movie is based on the Holocaust and the Jewish Religion.

Election

Monday - Today, we continued to work on creating population pyramids.  I also gave out the election project, which will be due on Friday, November 2nd.  

Tuesday - We will begin talking about the election and the 2 candidates.  The students will learn the different political parties and how the election works.  We will also address various issues and where each candidate stands.

Wednesday -  Computer Lab.  This day will be used to allow the students to research the candidate of their choice.  They have to give both sides to each issue and know where each candidate stands.

Thursday - We will talk more about particular issues and how the relate to us as Americans.  The students will also be given time in class to work.

CRA Test & week ahead

     The Constructed Response Assessment (CRA) was given to each student during homeroom this morning.  This test consisted of 4 tasks (questions) and each student had to write out their answers.  

     Today each student was given a Census worksheet to complete by Thursday, October 25th.  This is a short census that each student will conduct of 10 different families.  The students can choose whomever they wish (friends, cousins, aunts, uncles, ect.)  In class on Thursday, we will be completing a population pyramid with the information that each child received from their census.  

     This week we begin talking about population.  This is a very short section and a quiz will be given on Thursday over the definitions.

Fall Break is coming..

The students will be out of school on Friday and Monday due to Fall Break.  On Monday, the students will be completing an October Review sheet.  This review worksheet goes through everything that they have learned the first nine weeks.  On Tuesday, each class will be taking the English Benchmark Assessment.  We will be doing a bullying lesson on Wednesday and Thursday we will be in the computer lab working on study island.  I hope everyone has a fabulous fall break!!!!

Standards Project

With the 9 weeks coming to an end, we are completing a Standards Comic Book in class this week.  This comic book covers each standards that we have covered during this first 9 weeks.  This will be a project grade of 100 points and be included on the new 9 weeks.  If students do not finish by Thursday, then it will be homework for Thursday night.  This project is due on Friday, October 12th. On Friday we will be going to the computer lab and completing a career questionnaire online with our school counselor, Mrs. Whittington. 

 Please remember that Tuesday, October 16th report cards come out!!!

This past week..

Last Friday we finished up the Mapping Unit.  This unit consisted of learning about various types of maps (physical, political, climatic, vegetation, ect), longtitude/latitude, and time zones.  The test was given on Tuesday, September 25th.  Wednesday we went to the computer lab and each of the classes worked on Study Island.  If your son or daughter needs extra credit this nine weeks, they can get it from Study Island.  Each blue ribbon = 2 Extra credit points.  Today, we completed a starter quiz and we moved into learning about foreign phrases.  Tomorrow (Friday), each student will be making a brochure using all of the 8 foreign phrases we learned today!

This week (Sept.17-Sept.21)

Today, each class was given a pop quiz.  This quiz was over latitude & longitude and coordinates.  On Tuesday, we will begin learning about time zones.  For the remainder of the week, we will be mastering the skill of time zones.  As of right now, the mapping test (including maps, longitude/latitude, and time zones) is planned for next Tuesday, Sept. 25th. 

 REMEMBER: Wednesday, Sept. 19th book reports are DUE!!!!

What is coming up..

 Progress Reports were issued yesterday, September 13th.  This is the halfway point of the first 9 weeks.

Each student has chosen a book to read for their book report.  I took each class to the library a week and a half ago to choose a book.  The book reports are due on Wednesday, September 19th.  I have given them a paper that tells them exactly what needs to be on there paper.  

On Monday, they will have a short quiz on the coordinates.  I have told them about this and they have a sheet with exactly what they need to study.

Maps Due Tommorrow...

Tomorrow (September 7) the map project will be due.  This assignment was handed out last Wednesday.  We have just started longitude and latitude and we are looking at having our next test next Friday, September 14th.  Each student has picked a book to read for their book report.  More details will be given about this assignment tomorrow.

Coming Up...

We had our first test last Thursday (August 23) and I was very pleased with the grades.  Our next project will be handed out tomorrow, August 29 and the students will be responsible for creating their own maps.  These maps will be on full size poster board and they will start from CMS and go to their house.  This project is used to measure their ability to read and create maps with all the correct information.  Open House went great last night.  Thank you to all parents and students who stopped by!!

Off and running...



We are off to a great start for this new school year. I couldn't be more pleased with my students and their behavior over this past week and a half. I am so excited for this school year : ) We dove into starting class on Tuesday and began with the Nature of Geography. We completed Part One, Two, and Three notes this week. Today (Friday), we took a quiz on the Continents and Oceans. I also handed out to each student their first PROJECT!!!! The best thing to use for the globe is a Styrofoam ball from Micheal's or Hobby Lobby. The students can also use a baseball or tennis ball. HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!
